Ilias's MSc Motorcycle Engineering Experience
What is your favourite thing about Swansea campus?
The workshops including high-end technical facilities, available to the students to work on their projects of interest; the possibility to apply the theory we learn in class and being able to go into the workshop and perform the actual measurements and tests related to these subjects.
I’ve had the privilege to run and ride for the University’s Motorcycle Racing project for two years. The current racing teams offer great opportunities related to development and competition, also allowing the students to gain real life experience in real paddocks, working on real projects. From machining to engine work, engine dynos, to suspension work, opportunities are there if you want them.
Why did you choose ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?
In 2018, when I was 15, my father and I were choosing between ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and a German university for my higher education. We visited ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø during an open day, and I was immediately impressed by the cutting-edge technology and equipment available.
The highlight of our visit was meeting Dr Owen Williams, whose expertise and teaching approach greatly influenced our decision. The staff’s dedication and the university’s friendly atmosphere were also pivotal. Dr Owen’s commitment reassured us of the quality of education I would receive. Convinced, I decided to aim for enrolment at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, starting my journey towards turning my passion into knowledge. After just turning 17, I started the course in 2020.
What do you enjoy outside your studies?
I love staying active; whether it’s working out, exploring the outdoors, or mountain biking, I’m always on the move. Over the past two years, I’ve taken up surfing – a sport I now thoroughly enjoy in the beautiful nature of the Gower, which has become my favourite activity. However, my passion for motorcycles occupies much of my time outside of studies. I’m constantly engaged in racing, working on various projects, and experimenting with new ideas and concepts, all in the spirit of fun.
What are you doing now, how did you get to where you are and how has your course helped you in your career?
Besides my Master’s in Motorcycle Engineering here at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, I’m currently working as a race engineer/ crew chief for MRP Racing in the BMW Motorrad Motorsport IDM Superbike team. When I graduate, I’m aiming to continue working in the racing paddock. I also aim to work within a development department in the automotive industry, with the end goal of a becoming a technical director of some sort. I’ve also got interest in opening my own ‘performance shop’, building and engineering race bikes.
Besides the support of my parents, passion and continuous work towards my goals are the main driving factor. The knowledge we gain here is invaluable in the way it’s taught and is highly appreciated in the industry.
What has been your favourite thing about your course?
One of the major highlights for me has been the amount of hands-on opportunities and the sheer amount of specialised knowledge which the staff offers and shares with us. These experiences have allowed me, as a student, to engage in various professional activities related to motorcycles and racing. In particular, being given the opportunity to develop and ride for the university’s racing team has been an exceptional experience. Moreover, I had the privilege of eventually leading the team, which has undoubtedly been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my young life.
Would you recommend ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and why?
I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in motorcycles or motorsport. I feel, and have noticed from established professionals, that the knowledge and opportunities you can get through this unique course can’t be gained elsewhere.
The combination of specialised knowledge, the teaching method, hands-on opportunities, and the support of the University makes this course exceptional. I believe that pursuing this course would provide passionate individuals with a distinct advantage and a solid foundation for their future endeavours in this field.
