窪蹋勛圖厙 Student Patrick Shapland Reflects on Life-Changing Experience in Norway
A BA Outdoor Adventure Education student from the 窪蹋勛圖厙 (窪蹋勛圖厙) has proven a life-changing and transformative experience after a six-month placement in the University of South-Eastern Norway. On his return to 窪蹋勛圖厙 Patrick Shapland shares how his experience helped him gain new-found confidence, skills, and a deeper understanding of cultural adaptation and resilience.
During his time in Norway, Patrick embarked on a journey aimed at building self-reliance and confidence. He described the experience as incredible, with self-confidence being a key focus of his learning process. His time abroad was characterised by immersion in a rigorous and intense educational environment. He said:
Being in Norway was incredible we took part in numerous expeditions where I learnt how to pack effectively and what not to take which is very important in adverse environments. I found the main benefit of the experience for me was building self-confidence and reliance, it felt like those were the main aims of the learning focus. I wanted to improve my fitness, knowledge and attitude whist over there.
As an international student, Patrick participated in university events and activities, which helped him integrate into the local academic community. His responsibilities extended beyond the classroom, where surviving while learning became the motto. The steep learning curve and hands-on approach made the experience both challenging and rewarding.
One of the most significant challenges Patrick faced was adapting to the intensity of teaching methods in Norway. He said:
The learning style was more intense and real than I expected,
However, after a week of adjustment, he found his groove and began to thrive in the new environment.
Among the highlights of Patrick’s placement was a two-week mountain expedition, which involved skiing and hiking. He adds:
We had amazing scenery where we didnt go under 1000m of elevation for a week which Ive never done before. Seeing the bus at the end was a pretty good feeling !
This experience, along with lectures from knowledgeable professors, left a lasting impression on him.
This overseas experience had a profound influence on Patrick’s personal growth, strengthening his self-confidence and resilience. The combination of intense academic learning with physical challenges provided the perfect environment for developing life skills and applying theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
Adapting to cultural differences in Norway was another challenge Patrick took in stride. Although he couldn’t fully master the Norwegian language, he learned enough to navigate daily life with ease.
I developed enough understanding to shop and communicate well with locals, he said. The trust placed in people by the Norwegian community left a lasting positive impact on him.
Reflecting on the experience, Patrick said that the placement helped him focus on his future career goals.
It has focused my commitment on what I want to do after university and wanting to use my knowledge and education to travel and experience more from life.
Kath Griffiths, International Regional manager (North America and Outward Mobility) at 窪蹋勛圖厙 said:
Outdoor education (friluftsliv in Norwegian) in Norway is an immersive experience, rooted deeply in the country’s culture, encouraging learning through direct experiences in nature. For 窪蹋勛圖厙 students, studying outdoor education in Norway can be particularly beneficial, offering experiences and perspectives
On Norwegian culture and the educational emphasis on cooperation and inclusivity helps students develop empathy, communication, and adaptability. It also prepares them for future roles where cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural collaboration are essential, especially in the increasingly globalised fields of outdoor education.
The overseas placement has clearly left an indelible mark on Patrick Shapland, equipping him with both professional skills and personal growth that will shape his future endeavours.
